As a Tableau and ETL Developer at RWA Pharmacy for the past six years, I’ve seen first hand how pharmacy data can drive better decision-making and operational efficiency. In this blog, I’ll share how my role contributes to customer success, the challenges I help solve, and why maintaining data integrity is fundamental to our work.

My Journey into Data Development

I started at RWA Pharmacy in 2019 as a trainee Tableau developer, gradually expanding my expertise into backend processes - including building and maintaining data pipelines and developing reports and dashboards for customers. My deep understanding of pharmacy data and SQL, developed over the last six years, allows me to translate raw information into meaningful insights that help pharmacies optimise their operations and improve decision-making.

Balancing Customer Needs with Best Practices

A core part of my role is designing reports that meet customer-specific requirements while ensuring they are scalable and beneficial to our broader customer base.

Rather than building one-off reports for individual customers, I focus on creating solutions that deliver value to multiple customers. This involves working closely with our customers to understand their challenges and designing reports that address common business needs. While we do accommodate bespoke requests when necessary, much of our work revolves around refining and optimising pre-designed reports to maintain efficiency and accuracy.

A Methodical Approach to Problem-Solving

When a customer flags an issue - whether it’s a data discrepancy or a report malfunction - I follow a structured troubleshooting process to pinpoint and resolve the problem quickly.

  1. Initial assessment: I inspect the report to see how the data appears on my end.
  2. Tracing the issue: If something seems off, I track the problem back through the data loading process or into the SQL tables.
  3. Resolving and verifying: Once the root cause is identified, I correct the issue and validate that the data now flows correctly.

This systematic approach minimises downtime, ensures data accuracy, and keeps everything running smoothly for our customers.

Why Data Integrity Matters

Maintaining data integrity is one of the most critical aspects of my work. When building new data pipelines, I ensure that all pharmacy data is properly formatted, follows company standards, and remains reliable. For example, I stay vigilant against missing data or duplicate entries that could distort reports.

Before launching a new report, I rigorously test various scenarios to confirm the data displayed is accurate - whether that means filtering information or showing only a subset, such as the top 10% of a specific product. Ultimately, it’s all about ensuring that what customers see aligns with their expectations, no matter how they interact with the data.

Driving Customer Success Through Collaboration

Although I don’t interact with customers daily, my work plays a direct role in their success. Through monthly calls and regular updates, I collaborate with customers to ensure our reporting solutions meet their evolving needs.

For example, we recently worked with a pharmacy in Northern Ireland to develop a report that tracks control drug orders and dispensing compliance. By flagging discrepancies in real-time, this report helps them stay compliant with regulatory requirements - an essential part of their operations.

Looking Ahead: Continuous Innovation

My role isn’t just about maintaining existing systems - it’s about continuously improving and innovating them. My favourite part of this role stems from the problem-solving element of my day-to-day tasks.

Whether I’m optimising workflows, resolving issues in data pipelines, or developing new reporting capabilities, my focus is always on enhancing our pharmacy business intelligence solutions. By leveraging data effectively, we help pharmacies make informed decisions, improve efficiency, and ultimately deliver better patient care.

Final Thoughts

At RWA Pharmacy, data isn’t just numbers on a screen - it’s the foundation of smarter pharmacy management. My work behind the scenes ensures that customers receive the accurate, actionable insights they need to operate efficiently and effectively.
